Halloween and Pedestrian Accidents

Injury Lawyer Serving Boulder, Longmont, Broomfield & Surrounding Areas in Colorado

trick or treat According to SafeKids.Org, 12% of children five and younger are allowed to trick or treat without adult supervision. Sadly, this absolutely plays a role in the near doubling of fatal pedestrian traffic accidents that occur on Halloween night. Young children, unsupervised, may not exercise caution in the same manner as older and more experienced kids. If you are planning on letting your little one head out alone this year, please take time to instruct them in safe behaviors to help ensure everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.

As a general rule, children younger than 12 should be accompanied by an adult for trick or treating. However, if you are not accompanying your children, please be sure to:

  • Apply reflective tape to costumes and treat bags
  • Provide glow-sticks, flashlights, or headlamps to be used in between houses
  • Select costumes that use face paint instead of vision-obstructing masks
  • Make sure costumes are the right size to prevent slip and fall accidents

In addition, it is important that you talk to your child about:

  • Staying on sidewalks and in well-lit areas
  • Only crossing the street at crosswalks and on green signals
  • Looking both ways –twice– before crossing a street
  • Staying with their group

These steps can help protect your child from injury, but may not be enough to prevent the dangerous behaviors of others from causing harm.
