Traffic to Increase on US 36

Injury Lawyer Serving Boulder, Longmont, Broomfield & Surrounding Areas in Colorado

after an auto accident Beginning in October, US 34 – the road running through Big Thompson Canyon and linking much of Northern Colorado to Estes Park – will be closed for repair. This will inevitably result in increased traffic on US 36 as people reroute to get to Estes and RMNP during the popular winter season. Because conditions along US 36 can already be somewhat touch and go during the colder months, it is important that you take extra steps to protect yourself and your family from injury during this period of increased traffic.

While it is still a few months away, preparing now for busier road conditions is a good way to make sure you are ready when the time comes. Practicing thoughtful driving, particularly on narrower and two-lane stretches of road, is the best place to start.

Courteous mountain driving entails:

  • Allowing a 2-3 car gap between yourself and the vehicle in front of you
  • Using slow vehicle pull offs (even if you don’t think of yourself as a slow vehicle) when more than three cars have piled up behind you
  • Slowing before curves and paying close attention to speed and traffic signs
  • Using your signals when entering and leaving passing lanes
  • Avoiding all forms of distraction including cellphone, GPS, and onboard electronics

These steps won’t guarantee against an accident, but they will reduce your risks of causing or being the victim of one.
